Beyond average population density: Measuring sprawl with density-allocation indicators

چکیده
Average population density has been a traditional urban sprawl indicator, but it is insufficient to encapsulate its detrimental impacts. We demonstrate that cities of identical average may be subject very different levels car dependency, CO2 emissions and public budget deficits. To capture this, we shed light into the properties two “density-allocation” indicators: percentage land in which falls below predetermined threshold value, fraction living such areas. Using unique data, measure these indicators more than 1100 areas 29 OECD countries at three time points: 1990, 2000 2014. identify four patterns for coevolution indicators. The results show densification cores concurs with rapid suburbanization many cities. perform intertemporal cross-city cross-country analyses discuss multiple policy implications emerging from them.

Modeling human population patterns on tree density
In order to evaluate the possible correlation between the tree density and the human population density, the forested area in Nav Asalem district located in Guilan Province was selected. The descriptors of tree number and basal area per hectare as well as the stand density index were used to determine the tree density, which was conducted from a 2014 forest inventory including 62 cluster (558 p...
متن کاملMeasuring Sprawl
Suburban sprawl is one of the most avidly followed urban issues in the United States today. However, despite the level of attention that is afforded sprawl, their remains relatively little understanding of its determinants and its constitution. Previous attempts to measure sprawl have focused largely on costing out its impacts rather than quantifying its characteristics. Also, the characterizat...
متن کاملMeasuring Heterogeneous Traffic Density
Traffic Density provides an indication of the level of service being provided to the road users. Hence, there is a need to study the traffic flow characteristics with specific reference to density in detail. When the length and speed of the vehicles in a traffic stream vary significantly, the concept of occupancy, rather than density, is more appropriate to describe traffic concentration. When ...
متن کاملMeasuring single-cell density.
We have used a microfluidic mass sensor to measure the density of single living cells. By weighing each cell in two fluids of different densities, our technique measures the single-cell mass, volume, and density of approximately 500 cells per hour with a density precision of 0.001 g mL(-1). We observe that the intrinsic cell-to-cell variation in density is nearly 100-fold smaller than the mass ...
متن کاملUrban Sprawl, Land Values and the Density of Development
The character of the residential development occurring at the periphery of a metropolitan area has extensive and diverse economic and social implications. The kinds and prices of housing produced, the population groups served, and the cost and problems of providing public services are all determined by the workings of the development process. An understanding of this process requires an examina...
